Dear person who is using AI every day and still can't figure out why it doesn't quite feel like leverage,
The tool isn't the problem. You are.
Not because you're using it wrong. Because you haven't actually told it what you need. You've been giving it vague inputs and getting plausible outputs and calling that good enough, and the gap between plausible and exactly right is where all the leverage lives.
Most people are using AI as a very sophisticated search bar. You type something in, you get something back, you close the tab. It's useful the way a calculator is useful. Functional, limited, and completely dependent on you knowing exactly what to ask every single time. That is one percent of what it can do.
The version that actually changes how much you can hold isn't a tool you ask questions to. It's a system that already knows your context, surfaces what you need before you think to ask, executes on your behalf, and compounds everything you teach it over time. It remembers what you decided last quarter. It flags the thing that's about to become a problem. It doesn't need you to re-explain yourself every session because you already told it, once, exactly what it needs to know.
Getting from the first version to the second is entirely a function of how well you scoped it.
I spent weeks before writing a single prompt. Not weeks learning the tools. Weeks going through every function of my business and asking what I specifically needed in each one. Not "help me with email." Not "manage my content." The minutest details. What does a good email look like? What criteria does it meet? What tone, what timing, what should it never do? When does it escalate and to whom? I did this for paid ads. For customer experience. For product development. For content. If you're building a personal brand, the equivalent is your content workflow, your posting logic, your voice, what you never want it to say on your behalf. If you're managing a household and a family and a career simultaneously, it's every domain of that life mapped out with the same precision. For every function that was eating my time and producing results I had to redo.
The way I did it was voice memos. Hours of them. Every function, every friction point, everything I wanted to exist that didn't. Then I brought those memos to Claude and had it ask me clarifying questions until it had the full picture. Then I put everything on the table and asked one more question. What am I missing? How else could AI do this better and faster than I had already thought of?
And then I read every single line it gave back. Not skimmed. Read.
This is the part people skip. You ask, you skim, it looks plausible, you move on. That is exactly how you end up with something technically functional and practically useless. Slop doesn't announce itself. It sounds right on first read. It's only when you're actually running it that you realize the whole thing was built on assumptions you never corrected. By then you've wasted time building the wrong thing.
So I pushed back. I said this doesn't capture it. I said this part is right but this part isn't. I kept going until what was on the page matched exactly what I meant. Real, specific things the agent would do, the way I would do them, with the criteria I had been carrying in my head for years but had never once written down.
My husband thought I was wasting time. Hours going through what each agent would do, how they'd talk to each other, what each one owned versus escalated. He couldn't understand why I wasn't just building.
Here is what I knew that he didn't yet. If I built before I had the full picture, I'd build something. Then rebuild it when I understood more. Then rebuild it again when that changed. That cycle is months. Most people who tell you AI didn't work for them are describing exactly that cycle. They built first. The system never held because the thinking was never done before the building started.
When the scope is right before the build begins, the build takes almost nothing. I spent months on the thinking. The actual builds were a fraction of that time. Each piece launched in phases and held, because I already knew exactly what it was before anyone touched it.
